Life expectancy – one of the most important indicators of the state of society – on average was 78.29 years, for men – 74.93, for women – 81.81 (as of June 1995). This is very high indicators, allowing Canada to occupy the fourth place in the world after Japan, Iceland and Switzerland, overtaking the United States on average 1.2 years.
In terms of living standards, Canada ranks sixth in the world: it is overtaken by the United States, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany and Japan. Canada surpasses the United States in terms of life expectancy, and Japan – in terms of education.
That is why, four years in a row – from 1993 to 1996 – according to the annual statistics of the United Nations, Canada was called the best place in the world for living on a set of the most important criteria (general living standards, ecology, culture and art, education, crime, real incomes, life expectancy etc).
More than 65% of Canadians live in their own homes. More than two thirds have consumer goods such as cars, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, telephones and radios. Telephone communication is widespread almost everywhere in Canada. 16 million telephone lines provide communication in 99% of Canadian homes. In 1995, about 30% of Canadians had personal computers, and more than 40% of these computers were equipped with modems for Internet access.
The Geneva “Corporate Resources Group” defines the best city in the world for human life (“CRG Quality-of-life Reports”) every year. In 1995, four Canadian cities were named in the top ten cities, with Vancouver second (after Geneva), and Toronto fourth (the third was Vienna), and in 1996 Vancouver and Toronto took the first two places.
In October 1996, the popular American magazine Fortune called Toronto the best city in the world (followed by London, Singapore and Paris).
