A comparison of life in Edmonton and Montreal.
We immigrated to Montreal (Quebec), but after a year and a half decided to move to Edmonton (Alberta). I’ll tell you about the pros and cons of these two cities.
The first reason we decided to leave Montreal & # 8212; this is, of course, French. Without the French language, it is very difficult to find a good, high-paying job here. Knowledge of one English language is not enough here. Employers require, as a rule, knowledge of both French and English, and French should be the main one. Sadiki and schools, mostly French-speaking. If your native language is not English, in fact, you have no choice, and you can only give the child to a French-language school. I heard that they try to strangle the English language, i.e. do not allow it to develop.
In Edmonton, knowledge of French is not required at all. For a year of life here, I never had to apply it. When applying for a job, knowing the French language is not a prerequisite.
Now I will compare the ethnic composition. What I like about Edmonton is mostly a white population. In Montreal, everything was much more colorful. There are many Arabs, blacks and Asians, their percentage in society is much higher.
Comparison of taxes in Edmonton and Montreal.
Taxes & # 8212; this is another reason why the province of Alberta wins from Quebec. In the province of Quebec, the purchase tax is 15%. When you buy something in the store, the total amount will be increased by this amount. In Alberta, this tax is 5%.
As for taxes on wages. In Montreal, the payroll tax is about 30%, in Edmonton & # 8212; approximately 22-25%.
Kindergartens and social benefits.
Quebec is famous for its large social payments. It’s true if your income is quite low. We received quite good children’s payments. But if your income rises, literally at $ 1-2 per hour, child benefits are immediately curtailed. And it turns out that in many situations it is more profitable to have a lower salary. In Alberta benefits are lower, but there is also a tax on the patch less.
In Montreal, there are subsidized gardens. This is when you immediately pay for it the full cost, and then the state returns some of the amounts paid to you. These payments are also curtailed as soon as your family’s income begins to grow. In the end, it turns out that the garden in Edmonton is cheaper. When we arrived here, we received a sub-judge for a kindergarten. Our kindergarten this year cost $ 900 a month, of which $ 550 was covered by the state. As a result, we paid $ 350 per month for it. In Montreal, we had to pay the full cost, and then the state returned us somewhere around $ 600 a month. Then the compensation became smaller, about $ 400, then only $ 300. As a result, Edmonton turned out to be more profitable.
In Montreal, we had a private home garden for 9 children. About him we have only positive feedback. There is an interesting difference, in Montreal children are fed, they provide all the food: breakfast, lunch and snack. Here in Edmonton, I’m going to take the whole baby with me. They motivate this by the fact that children are all different. This, of course, is the moment to which you need to get used. Accept that every day will have to prepare a child lunch with him in the garden and give something to him for a mid-morning snack.
Road traffic and public transport.
In Edmonton, things are much better with traffic. Here, the vast expanses and drive a car here is much nicer than in Montreal. In Montreal, even the driving style is very different. Due to the fact that there are quite narrow streets and a lot of cars themselves, aggression on the roads is felt. Here, in Edmonton, it’s much better and the culture of driving itself is different. On the roads very calm and comfortable.
As for public transport, in Montreal this is better. There buses are much more frequent, there is a metro. This is also a plus. In Edmonton there is no metro, instead of it there is a system of ground trains, but, frankly, I did not use them. However, as well as buses. But I know and see that they do not go here as often as we would like. And the time itself to get from point A to point B, can take an hour and a half. In Montreal at the same distances you can reach the desired point much faster.
Of course, the car is nicer to drive in Edmonton. The same road junctions, stripes, markings and infrastructure in Edmonton are much better. As for the traffic jams, it’s hard for me to compare. I get to work in 25 minutes, go to me about 30 kilometers. Most of my journey I ride along the highway, distances are not even felt here. Therefore, even if the work is far from home & # 8212; here it is not a problem. In Montreal, work can be 20 kilometers, but you’ll be traveling 40-60 minutes, some time standing in traffic jams. In Edmonton, it’s very rare to stand in traffic jams, this happened to me only twice a year. Both cases were associated with traffic accidents. Usually, there are no problems with traffic jams.
In Edmonton, great convenience is created by a ring road-highway around the city, through which you can reach anywhere in the city, by dropping directly into the desired area. And another highway passing through the city from west to east. Thus, there is no need to go through urban areas, standing at each traffic light.
Prices for gasoline in different cities.
I would also like to mention the prices for gasoline. In Alberta in winter, the price fell to 60 cents per liter. In Montreal, the price is at least $ 1 per liter. And more often, 1,15 & # 8212; $ 1.20.
Medicine in Edmonton and Montreal.
Our experience of colliding with medical services in Montreal is mostly negative. Quality of service was high, but waiting time & # 8212; horror. When you come to the clinic, you can wait 6-8 hours, waiting for the moment when you see a doctor. It is impossible to call in advance or to come and agree on the exact time of reception. In any case, it is necessary to defend several hours in the live queue. It is very uncomfortable. In Edmonton, a lot of clinics that work until 21 pm, including Saturdays. In Montreal this was not.
Here in Edmonton, I had an experience when I called at one o’clock in the afternoon and asked to make an appointment with the therapist at 16:45, immediately after the end of my working day. I was recorded without problems, and after a short 5-minute wait, somewhere at 16:50 I get to the therapist. In Montreal, all these processes are stretched for a much longer time. In Edmonton, we were assigned a family doctor and pediatrician two months after the treatment. In Montreal, it took more than 1 year.
The fact that the clinics are working on Saturdays, even if they are part-time workers & # 8212; it is very convenient. In Montreal this was not.
Culture and entertainment.
Montreal, without a doubt, is the leader in cultural events and all kinds of entertainment. Probably, no city in Canada can compare with Montreal in terms of the number of events held. Is that, Vancouver and Toronto. In Edmonton, in this regard, is more boring. The local way of life is more like a mode & # 8212; work & # 187 ;. In Montreal on any given day you can find yourself an unusual entertainment or an interesting event, from car shows to all kinds of concerts. At what, many of them are free.
In Edmonton, too, you can find quite a few activities, but because of the large distances it takes much longer to get to the downtown, where they mostly pass. This adds inconvenience, because, there is not only more road traffic, but also toll parking. In Montreal, you could just take the metro and get straight to the venue.
However, the province of Alberta is famous for its beautiful nature, it’s mountains and national parks located close by, where it’s easy to go on vacation on weekends.
Shops and shopping centers.
Shops in Montreal and Edmonton are no different. And there, and there are discounters and shops more expensive. A wide variety of brands, there are no noticeable differences in prices. In Edmonton there is a huge pier with a hundred shops, a cinema, restaurants and other entertainment, as well as many shopping centers located in different parts of the city.
Video story about life in these two cities.
If you are more comfortable watching the video than reading the story, take this opportunity.
If we sum up, we are very pleased that we moved to Edmonton. We are satisfied here, he likes us much more than Montreal. In Montreal, more focused on making money and on cultural and recreational activities. There’s an active, creative atmosphere, a desire for beauty. Edmonton is more created to work, earn money there, and live for oneself and for the family.
Recorded from the words of Natalia Leus.
Edmonton wins in everything except the climate! I think that I made the right choice, having decided to immigrate to the province of Alberta.
