The mountain village of Bormida is in the province of Savona in northwestern Italy, about 80 kilometers from Genoa. The settlement is located high in the mountains, but near the sea. Therefore, the air there is very clean.
The village was founded in the Middle Ages and boasts amazing views and ancient architecture.
However, today this idyllic settlement has a total of 394 inhabitants and runs the risk of becoming another Italian ghost town. The reason for this depopulation is unemployment: many local residents left Bormidia in search of work.
To attract new residents to Bormid, the commune mayor Daniele Galliano decided to pay monetary compensation to all those who decide to move to them. His initiative, he unveiled on the official Facebook page. “If you move to a permanent place of residence in our commune, we will pay you two thousand euros.”
Although there are so few people left in the settlement, there are four restaurants, a library, a post office, a shop, a family hotel, a pharmacy and a doctor who comes to Bormid three times a week.
In the neighboring town, 20 km from Bormida, there is a fairly popular restaurant with a Michelin category Locanda dell’Angelo.
In addition to monetary compensation, those who wish to move to Bormidu will receive another important bonus: the opportunity to rent good housing at very low prices – from 50 to 120 euros per month.
For example, one of the proposals: renting a house with kitchen, bathroom, living room, garage, pantry, basement and four bedrooms for just some 50 euros per month (12.5 euros per week). For comparison: rent a house with two bedrooms in central London will cost about 3 thousand pounds a week (3900 dollars).
The mayor’s proposal attracted dozens of people: residents of Denmark, India, the United States, Great Britain, Hungary and Indonesia already want to move to a mountain village. At the same time, their absence does not bother them at all. After all, many can work remotely and are therefore interested in whether there is a high-speed Internet connection in the village.
